Allied Health Testing

Once you have applied for the Cardiovascular Technology or Surgical Technology Program, your next step is to schedule the Health Occupations Basic Entrance Test (HOBET).

Important Information About Testing:

  • In order to be considered for admission to the desired Program, preadmission testing is required after the application has been received and processed.
  • Admission to the Allied Health Programs are competitive and the preadmission test is a factor in the admission decision and does not guarantee admission.
  • Registration is required for the HOBET test  You may call Student Services at 757.388.2666 to schedule or sign-up on-line.
  • The HOBET preadmission test is for Cardiovascular and Surgical Technology applicants.
  • Scores will not be available the day of testing. The status of your application will be available within 30 days.
  • Testing begins promptly at the scheduled times.
  • Late arrivals are not allowed to enter the testing room and will need to reschedule.
  • Prepare for the test by visiting:  ATI for Allied Health and Study for HOBET Version V. 

About the Test:

  • The HOBET is a computer-based testing and will take approximately 3 hours and 29 minutes to complete.
  • Study for HOBET V.
  • You will be tested on the following essential math skills:  numbers and operations, algebraic applications, data interpretations, and measurement.
  • You will be tested on the following essential reading comprehension and critical thinking appraisal:  paragraph and passage comprehension and informational source comprehension.
  • You will be tested on the following essential English and language usage skills:  grammar and word meanings in context, spelling and punctuation, and structure.
  • You will be tested on the following essential science skills:  human body science, life science, earth and physical science, and scientific reasoning.
  • Only calculators provided by the College are allowed.
  • The College stongly recommends that you prepare for testing.
  • Cardiovascular Technology and Surgical Technology applicants have two opportunities per enrollment period to successfully test for the Health Occupations Basic Entrance Test (HOBET).  The second test attempt will cost the applicant $25.00.  There are no waiting period in between the first and second HOBET attempts.
  • Surgical Technology applicants must reach the Adjusted Individual Subtest Mean Score in all four categories:  reading (69.8%), math (67.0%), science (47.1%) and English (58.2%), set forth by ATI Testing for the HOBET V.
  • Beginning Jan. 1, 2012, each test will be $25.00 for Cardiovascular and Surgical Technology and will not be included in the administrative fee.
  • Cardiovascular Technology applicants must reach the Adjusted Individual Subtest Mean Score in all four categories:  reading (70.3%), math (67.9%), science (47.4%), and English (58.5%), set forth by ATI Testing for the HOBET V.
