Nursing Preadmission Testing

Once you have applied for College Admission to the Nursing Program, you must successfully pass the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) and the Career Assessment Inventory (CAI).

The tests are completed during testing periods as outlined below.

Important Information About TEAS Testing

  • In order to be considered for admission to the Nursing Program, preadmission testing is required after the application has been received and processed. Once you are accepted to the College, there will be a testing period posted on-line for you to register.
  • Registration is required for TEAS and CAI testing.  You may call Student Services at 757.388.2666 to schedule or sign-up on-line.
  • The TEAS and CAI is only for Nursing applicants.
  • TEAS and CAI is offered at our Chesapeake Campus and Sentara CarePlex Hospital for our Distance Learning Site in Hampton.
  • Testing Period-February 2, 2010 through April 23, 2010 for Traditional BSN and LPN to BSN applicants.
  • Testing Period-August 3, 2010 through October 8, 2010 for RN to BSN applicants.
  • Scores will be available the day of testing.
  • The status of nursing admission will be postmarked May 13, 2010 for Traditional BSN and LPN to BSN applicants.
  • The status of nursing admission will be postmarked Nov. 1, 2010 for RN to BSN applicants.
  • You will have two attempts to test for the TEAS during the testing period. You must schedule each test.
  • Testing begins promptly at the scheduled times.
  • Late arrivals are not allowed to enter the testing room and will need to reschedule.

About the Tests

  • The TEAS and CAI is computer-based testing and will take approximately 5 hours to complete.
  • The TEAS measures basic essential skills in the academic content area domains of Reading, Mathematics, Science, and English and Language Usage.  These etnry level skills were deemed important for nursing program applicants by a panel of nursing program curriculum experts.
  • The TEAS is a 170- item, four-option, multiple choice assessment.  The TEAS is a four hour test with 50 minutes allotted for Reading, 56 minutes allotted for Mathematics, 38 minutes allotted for Science, and 65 minutes allotted for English and Language Usage.
  • National Average must be met on all four areas in order to be considered for admission to the Nursing Program.
  • The College recommends that you prepare for testing.
  • The CAI is a career assessment test that will take approximately 45 minutes to complete.  The test is for data collection only and offers insight to career selection.
