Allied Health Programs Preadmission Testing

Once you have applied for the Cardiovascular Technology or Surgical Technology Program, your next step is to schedule the Health Occupations Basic Entrance Test (HOBET).

Important Information About Testing:

  • In order to be considered for admission to the desired Program, preadmission testing is required after the application has been received and processed.
  • Admission to the Allied Health Programs are competitive and the preadmission test is a factor in the admission decision and does not guarantee admission.
  • Registration is required for the HOBET test  You may call Student Services at 757.388.2666 to schedule or sign-up on-line.
  • The HOBET preadmission test is for Cardiovascular and Surgical Technology applicants.
  • Scores will not be available the day of testing. The status of your application will be available within 30 days.
  • Testing begins promptly at the scheduled times.
  • Late arrivals are not allowed to enter the testing room and will need to reschedule.

About the Test:

  • The HOBET is a computer-based testing and will take approximately 2 hours and 47 minutes to complete.
  • Study for HOBET Version 9.5.1.
  • You will be tested on the following essential math skills:  Whole numbers, decimal operations, fraction operations, percentage operations, number system conversions, and algebraic equations.
  • You will be tested on the following essential reading comprehension and critical thinking appraisal:  Inferential reading, main idea of passage and predicting of outcomes.
  • You will be tested on basic science skills.
  • You will be tested on stress, learning style, and test taking.
  • Only calculators provided by the College are allowed.
  • The College recommends that you prepare for testing.
  • Surgical Technology Outcomes for Jan. 11 - A specific level of achievement must be obtained on the test as follows:  a minimum score of 59% on essential math skills and a minimum score of 54% on the reading comprehension/critical thinking appraisal.
  • Surgical Technology Outcomes for July 11- Applicants must meet the North American Average on reading PLUS meet the North American average for the composite in order to be considered for admission. 
  • Cardiovascular Technology Outcomes for Jan. 11-Applicants mmust meet the North American average on reading OR math PLUS meet the North American average for the composite score in order to advance to the interview.
