You Matter at Sentara College of Health Sciences
Sentara College of Health Sciences champions and embraces a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion. As an institution of higher education that provides transformative education in health sciences, it is imperative that we create an environment that promotes excellence in professional practice through innovation and service. The three pillars that support our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion include a diverse and talented student body, faculty, and staff; an inclusive and supportive college environment; and outreach and engagement with our healthcare colleagues and community. We seek to foster a culture of inclusion and belonging in recognition of our students, employees, and the diverse communities we serve. In doing so, we will help to create positive change and acceptance for all members of our college community.
Zero Tolerance Policy
Every member of the Sentara College community is valued and shall be treated with respect and dignity. The college strives to cultivate a climate of cultural competence among faculty, staff, students, and our community. The college is dedicated to creating and maintaining a safe, welcoming, inclusive, and diverse community that nurtures a healthy environment and culture of mutual respect and consideration, allowing all members to thrive without fear of harassment, bullying, coercive behaviors, or related misconduct.
The college has no tolerance for any discriminatory, hostile, or harassing/demeaning behavior, whether verbal or physical. Any member of the college who engages in adverse behaviors surrounding race, class, culture, gender/gender identity, sexual orientation, ability, or other protected classes will be subject to the policies, rules, and procedures outlined in the Employee Conduct Policy and Employee Conduct Procedure (faculty and staff) and the Professional Code of Conduct and the Sexual & Gender-Based Harassment and Other Forms of Personal Misconduct Policies in the Student Handbook (students). Any violation of this Zero Tolerance Policy will result in a Critical Code of Conduct violation, which may result in termination (faculty and staff) or dismissal from the program (students).
The college encourages faculty, staff, and students to report suspected or actual violations. Retaliation against persons who report suspected or actual violations of the policy will not be tolerated and will be subject to additional disciplinary action. If, after investigating any complaint of harassment or unlawful discrimination, the college determines that the complaint was frivolous and not made in good faith or that the person provided false information regarding the complaint, disciplinary action may be taken against the individual who filed the complaint.
